Cancer that starts in the uterus is called endometrial cancer. The uterus is the hollow, pear-shaped region in the pelvis where the baby grows.
Endometrial cancer starts in the endometrium, which is the layer of cells that lines the inside of the uterus. Cancer of the endometrium is sometimes called cancer of the uterus. Uterine sarcoma is another type of cancer that can form in the uterus, but it is much less common than endometrial cancer.
Endometrial cancer is often caught early because it often causes unusual bleeding in the uterus. If uterine cancer is caught early, removing the uterus through surgery can often cure it.
